How to be profitable before the truck leaves the driveway

The money is decided at the quote, the deposit, and the card in the driveway. A full board can still leave the bank account thin.

The simple idea

A full board can still starve the bank. The leak is timing. You did the work Tuesday and hoped for a check on Friday. Profit starts earlier: a visit fee, a deposit on the bigger job, and a card when the work is finished.

If you had to explain it to a neighbor who has never run a truck, you would say this. We get paid when the work is done, not when someone remembers the invoice.

A normal weekday

A $600 hose bib and drywall patch looked fine on paper. Parts were $140. Labor and the drive ate $260. The customer said they would mail a check. Two weeks later the check had not come, and the owner had already bought materials for the next three jobs with money he did not have yet.

Read it again and circle two things: the clock, and the dollars. Everything else in the story is noise. The clock says whether the truck can be there. The dollars say whether the trip was worth leaving the cluster for.

What people get wrong

Owners treat payment as paperwork for tonight. Tonight is when you are tired, and the customer is no longer standing next to the finished work.

Here is that mistake in plain words. The price, the deposit, and the card are part of the job. If they are not on the ticket before you roll, you are hoping.

If you are training someone this week

Sit down for five minutes and say the rule in this order.

The old way sounds like this. Owners treat payment as paperwork for tonight. Tonight is when you are tired, and the customer is no longer standing next to the finished work. It feels helpful in the moment. It costs a day, a review, or the money you already spent getting there.

The way you work now sounds like this. The price, the deposit, and the card are part of the job. If they are not on the ticket before you roll, you are hoping.

The only sentence they are allowed to send is this one. The visit is $89. If we do the repair today, we take a card before I leave. Bigger work needs a deposit to hold the day.

If they want to sound nicer than that sentence, they are not being kind. They are giving away a promise the truck cannot keep. Have them say it out loud once before they text a real customer.

The numbers on one job

On that $600 job, $200 was left if the check arrived. It did not arrive. The month then needed four more jobs just to replace one late check. A card in the driveway would have kept the $200 on the day you earned it.

The box below is a starting price for your own book. Change it. It is not a promise to a homeowner until you have seen the house, the access, and the calendar.

What to say out loud

The visit is $89. If we do the repair today, we take a card before I leave. Bigger work needs a deposit to hold the day.

A new person at the desk should be able to say that sentence without adding a discount, a same day arrival, or a part you do not have. If they have to call you to finish the sentence, the sentence is not finished.

Walk the lead

Go one step at a time. The point of the walk is to keep the yes attached to something you can actually do.

walk

  • Price the visit — A posted fee, the same number every time.
  • Show the options — Good, better, and best, each with one price.
  • Take the deposit — A start date without money is a maybe.
  • Charge in the driveway — The phone is the register. Do not drive away unpaid.

  • Price — 600 — What they agreed

  • Labor and drive — 260 — The truck's morning
  • Left — 200 — Only if you collect

Where Sqyre holds the work

Payments and invoicing from the mobile app are how the driveway becomes the register. The shops that wait until tonight write off more than they admit. Use the profit margin calculator once a quarter. If the fee does not cover the drive plus the first hour, the fee is a hobby.

The trade page is plumbing. The part of the product that should carry this rule is payments. Jason can repeat the sentence. He should not invent a kinder one at night.

Questions people ask

faq

  • Why do busy shops still feel broke? — Because the work and the cash are on different days. The gap is where the money disappears.
  • Is a visit fee rude? — No. It is the price of a trained person and a truck showing up. Say it before you roll.
  • When is a deposit fair? — When you are holding a day that another customer could have used.
  • What if they want to mail a check? — You can allow it for a customer you already trust. A new job should not leave unpaid.

Before Friday

  1. Post the visit fee where the desk can see it.
  2. Turn on pay from the phone and use it on the next finished job.
  3. Look at last month's unpaid invoices and call two of them.
